Orient Express Launches the World’s Largest Sailing Yacht

The legendary Orient Express extends its storied heritage into maritime travel with the debut of the Corinthian, a 722 ft sailing yacht that claims the title of the world’s largest of its kind. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique and christened in Saint-Nazaire, the vessel marks a bold evolution of a brand synonymous with refined travel since 1883. Following its launch, the Corinthian set course for the French Riviera, beginning an inaugural season that spans the Mediterranean and Adriatic before crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean for winter. This expansion into open water preserves the brand’s heritage while introducing a new era of slow, wind-powered luxury.

Onboard, the Corinthian offers 54 expansive suites spread across four decks, each designed under the direction of Maxime d’Angeac and crafted by approximately 2,000 French artisans. Interiors range from 485 to 2,476 sq ft, defined by panoramic glazing, private terraces, and elevated ceiling heights that surpass traditional cruise standards. Each suite includes a dedicated butler, reinforcing the bespoke service ethos. Culinary experiences are led by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, featuring five restaurants, private dining venues, and eight bars including an Art Deco speakeasy and a cabaret hall. Wellness and leisure are equally considered, with a Guerlain spa, a 16.5 m swimming lane, a pool, and a marina seamlessly integrated into the yacht’s design.

Technologically, the Corinthian is centered around SolidSail propulsion, an advanced system developed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Three towering masts exceeding 320 ft support over 16,000 sq ft of rigid sails capable of rotating 360 degrees and tilting up to 70 degrees. During sea trials, the yacht achieved 12 knots under sail alone in 20-knot winds. Hybrid propulsion powered by liquefied natural gas ensures reduced emissions, while AI-assisted marine detection and dynamic positioning systems enhance safety and eliminate the need for anchoring. Under ideal conditions, the vessel glides silently using wind alone, signaling a shift toward sustainable ultra-luxury cruising. A sister ship, Olympian, is already scheduled to follow, further cementing the brand’s maritime ambitions.
