Why OMEGA’s Golf Week Became a Status Event

From 3 to 6 September 2026, the OMEGA European Masters returned to Crans-Montana, where the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club has hosted the tournament since 1939. The setting remains central to its identity – an Alpine course above the resort, an international field, and a spectator base of around 50,000. Few sporting events in Switzerland combine this degree of continuity with an established luxury environment.

The 2026 edition added another name to the tournament’s hierarchy. Thriston Lawrence defeated Paul Casey on the fourth play-off hole to claim his third OMEGA European Masters title. He became only the second player after Severiano Ballesteros to win the event three times since its inclusion as a founding DP World Tour event in 1972. Lawrence had already won in Crans-Montana in 2022 and 2025, making his relationship with the course unusually direct.

The significance of the week extends beyond the result. OMEGA has been title sponsor since 2001, placing the tournament within a broader Swiss culture of precision, watchmaking and Alpine hospitality. Its roll of champions includes Ballesteros, Lee Westwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Åberg, while the 2026 leaderboard brought together established international names and Swiss representation, including Joel Girrbach, who finished tied 9th. The result is less a conventional golf week than a recurring meeting point between sport, heritage and contemporary status.
