The Bugatti Destrier Turns Speed Into Sculpture
What happens when a machine built for speed is designed to be admired rather than merely driven? The Bugatti Destrier, the third one-of-one creation from the Bugatti Programme Solitaire, approaches the question through proportion rather than performance. Built around the carbon-fibre monocoque of the Bolide, Bugatti’s most extreme track machine, it strips away much of the visual language associated with downforce and allows the underlying form to stand on its own. At just 1 metre tall, with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, Destrier is lower than any other Bugatti model.
Where the Bolide is defined by wings, vents and aerodynamic additions, Destrier is defined by mass, proportion and volume. The cabin sits low between the front wings, while the body narrows behind the doors before expanding over the rear wheels. Previous Solitaire commissions, Brouillard and F.K.P. Hommage, were rooted in stories and historical references. Destrier begins instead with form. Its connection to Bugatti history remains precise. The Type 57 platform produced both the streamlined Type 57G and Type 57C “Tank” racers and the Type 57SC Atlantic. Above the windscreen, a hand-laser-engraved plate brings the two worlds together, depicting the Type 57G Tank and Type 57SC Atlantic.
The exterior follows the same restraint. The signature Bugatti C-line pauses before the front wheel well, the horseshoe grille is wider than the Bolide’s, and the rear incorporates a blended wing recalling the Chiron Profilée. Finished in bespoke “Sapphire Celeste”, the body combines diamond-inspired particles with polished aluminium brightwork, while selectively tinted carbon fibre keeps the exposed material integrated into the design. Inside, the Bolide’s motorsport-focused cockpit gives way to a more tailored environment, with “Ambre Voyageur” leather and nubuck, 3D-knitted textile and copper yarn details. Hammered metal surfaces reference medieval armour, while the same W16 powertrain remains beneath the bodywork, producing 1,600 PS. Destrier is scheduled for its unveiling during Monterey Car Week, culminating at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 16, 2026.
